Why everyone should visit Hiroshima at least once!

On August 6th 1945, Hiroshima became the first city in the world to be struck with an atomic bomb. Its something we may all have read about in history class in school, or learned about briefly whilst watching some documentary on TV. But this cannot compare to actually visiting the atomic bomb museum, reading the harrowing accounts, seeing the exhibits and spending some time strolling through the peace memorial park with a knowledgable local guide.

Listen to one of our past clients give her thoughts on her trip to Hiroshima and why she thinks it should be on everyone’s itinerary.

Just a short ferry ride off the coast of Hiroshima lies Miyajima Island, which is a stunning UNESCO world heritage site. The iconic red “floating tori” gate in the water is the single most photographed sight in all of Japan.

If you have a free day in Kyoto, it is possible to take a bullet train to Hiroshima and also visit Miyajima and go back to Kyoto that same day, but it is a lot of traveling and you may not have long on to spend on the beautiful Miyajima island.

If you wish to visit Hiroshima and stay overnight on Miyajima island (highly recommended as the island becomes very peaceful after the last ferry departs) you could check out our all time most popular small group tour Japan Discovered or our self guided tour The Golden Route.
