Mount Koya

Meditate for a fresh mindset

One of the most spiritually rewarding places to visit in the Kansai region.  Koya-san as it is called, is a sacred site established 1,200 years ago by Kobo Daishi a religious scholar.

探す Mount Koya

There has been a religious community here since 816 when the monk named Kukai (Kobo Daishi) returned from studying for two years in China. Kukai also established the 88 Temples of Shikoku Pilgrimage Route (1,200km), which thousands of pilgrims embark upon each year. The plateau at the top is home to more than 100 temples and monasteries. Many pilgrims begin and complete the journey by visiting Mount Koya as a mark of respect to its founder.

The atmosphere is truly magical making it a wonderful place to discover the true meaning of Japanese spirituality and beliefs. Walk around this mystical setting, a very peaceful and beautiful wooded area.  Stay overnight in one of Koyasan’s 111 temple lodges.  Traditionally they were used to service the devoted pilgrims who walked the ‘88 Temples of Shikoku’.

Join an evening calligraphy session, or early morning chant with the monks. Discover “Zazen” the meditation practice linked with Zen Buddhism. Sit still in private reflection and empty your mind of “aim” and “measure.” Breathe effortlessly by letting go. This is the beginning of Zazen. Bringing peace to body and soul in a turbulent world. Then enjoy a a stylised vegetarian Buddhist breakfast with a fresh mindset.
