Cruise around the Geibikei gorge in a flat-bottomed boat which is unique to the area, while being serenaded with traditional songs. The emerald-green waters of the Iwai River have eroded volcanic rock to form Genbikei Gorge. The guides use long bamboo poles to steer the boat through the river, past breathtaking views of the rugged cliffs and waterfalls which stretch for kilometers. Tradition says you can toss a rock into the surrounding caves for good luck. Geibikei was designated a Natural Monument in 1925 and is 2km long with sheer walls of rock reaching 50 to 100 meters on either side.
Enjoy eating fresh local fish at the entrance to the gorge, or buy fish food to feed fish in the Satetsu River. Experience a unique and charming way to satisfy your snack cravings at Kakko-ya café, operating since 1878. Place your order in a basket, then send it across the river by pulling the rope. When the basket returns, it will be filled with delightful dango – rice dumplings filled with sweet bean, sesame, or sweet soy sauce.
