Omishima

Artistic and Historic

Omishima is located in the Seto Inland Sea, half way between Honshu and the island of Shikoku. It is the last major island on the Ehime side of the Shimanami Kaidō (a 60 kilometer long toll road that connects Japan’s main island). Admire the abundant nature with orange groves and beautiful sunsets.

The island’s religious importance is noted at Ōyamazumi Shrine, though it is the museum with the greatest collection of historical samurai weaponry and armour in the whole of Japan that make a stop here significant.

Discover the many places to view interesting art, visit Ōmishima Museum of Art, for wide range of contemporary Nihonga, Japanese style paintings and large scale works by Toshio Tabuchi. Find real gems in the remote southwest coast, situated high on a very steep slope uncover the humorous, contemporary and three dimensional works from the collection of Atsuo Tokoro, featuring artists such as Noe Katz, Marisol, Giacomo Manzu and Munehiro Ikeda.  Shipbuilding was once a major industry in the region, see this reflected at the Toyo Ito Museum of Architecture, is like a “vessel, embarking on its own voyage, carrying a cargo of architectural visions: of buildings and cities everywhere, past, present, and future”.  With each abstract model like delicate coral skeletons on a beach. Maternal instinct are evoked with the many bronze statues at the appropriately named Ken Iwata Mother and Child Museum.

Tatara Observation Deck offers a 360-degree view of the nearby bridge and islands. Hike to Irihi Falls and the rugged peaks above. Refresh with a swim at Utena Beach .
