Miyajima
Floating gates to a sacred island
Itsukushima Shrine appears to float, iconic and sacred through giant red Torii gates. Take the short ferry ride from the mainland to a UNESCO Heritage Site and most photographed location.
Discover Miyajima Island
Get selfies by the water then stroll to shrine grounds to view the Senjokaku, the largest structure and a central spot from which to explore the island. Hiroshige and more recently, Kunisada have created stunning artwork based on the impressive scenery on this island.
Benzaiten, goddess of music, art, and water is honoured at Daiganji Temple. Daishoin Temple shines with leaves of golden tones in Autumn. Built in 1407 the vivid five-story red pagoda Gojunoto is a beautiful amongst the serene scenery.
Miyajima is also home to a small population of approximately 2,000 people and free-roaming deer. Discover shrines and temples and take the ropeway up Mt. Misen for the entire island view.
