Kildare
Royal lands of power and powerful equines
Early Christian sites give way to stud farms for a Thoroughbred County.
Discover Kildare
Officially a county since 1296, midland and bordered by six counties, more than 100 stone castles were built in Norman times. From 1477 the 8th earl of Kildare exercised almost kingly power. Infamous for horse racing festivals on its flat fields. Contemplate the great legend of Ireland’s female patron saint at St. Brigid’s Cathedral, or head to the Hill of Allen, former seat of Irish warrior Fionn mac Cumhaill. Tour Castletown House in Celbridge or visit the peaceful Japanese Gardens as Tassa Eida’s work traces the journey of a soul from oblivion to eternity.
