Discover Gokayama
In the Shogawa River Valley, see the unique Gassho-style houses with steeply pitched thatched roofs in villages isolated in a mountainous region. Shō River meanders by Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. Villages of Ainokura and Suganuma are World Heritage sites.
Residents were saved by the mulberry trees, and by rearing silkworms in attics. See the preserved scenes in the 33 picturesque buildings, some now converted into Minshuku (Japanese B&Bs) and folk museums.
