Originally a 6th-century monastic development, Killaloe developed into a strategic stronghold in medieval Ireland.
As the birthplace of the most powerful Irish king, Brian Boru, it became the ancient capital of the country during his reign. Brian Boru had his palace, Kincora, here and you can explore the land where the palace lay at the present-day Catholic church located on high ground. In the centuries following Brian Boru’s reign, many cathedrals and other sites of worship were developed, particularly the 12th-century church of St. Flannans, which was destroyed and rebuilt in the 14th century.
