Kakunodate, founded in 1620, is one of Japan\u2019s best preserved samurai towns of its kind, a fascinating glimpse into Japan's feudal past, showcasing traditional samurai architecture. The blend of spacious streets, large courtyards, and the picturesque weeping cherry trees creates a unique atmosphere, especially during the hanami season in mid \u2013 late April when visitors flock to appreciate the stunning cherry blossoms.<\/p>\r\n

The six samurai houses open to the public, including the Aoyagi and Ishiguro houses, provide valuable insights into the lifestyle of samurai families. If we are in luck, we will also get to meet and sit with a descendant from the Ishiguro family, who opens his home to the public. \u00a0These well-preserved homes allow visitors to understand the architectural styles, furnishings, and daily life of both middle-class and wealthy samurai. During our time in Kakunodate we will stay in a rural friendly ryokan, experience making some wood carvings, and enjoy nice sake and food that evening.<\/p>\r\n

Today we will visit Kakunodate Original Samurai Residences & Edo Era Merchant district with a private local guide for an interesting walking tour of the area.<\/p>\r\nWalk into authentic samurai residences in an Edo era merchant district. Work alongside farmers on the land whilst learning local tales and about seasonality.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Tono is a small rustic town in Iwate prefecture known for its legends and oral history of folktales and mystical water sprites, the \"Kappa\".<\/div>\r\n

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before a half day with local guide to show you around traditional samurai residences & Edo era Merchant district. This fascinating walking tour of the area will take you an authentic Samurai residence on Bukeyashiki street. In April village will be particularly picturesque as huge numbers of cherry blossom trees will be blooming and local people will be celebrating \"hanami\" parties sitting under the blossoms.<\/div>\r\n

After leaving Kakunodate the tour will continue onto Ichinoseki and then Tono (Approx. 3 hours). Here you will meet a real Japanese farming family and stay with this family on a homestay. You may experience some light farm work, such as picking fruit, or harvesting vegetables, depending on the season. Travel west to hike a thousand steps up to ancient mountain trails. Visit the temple of Yamadera overlooking stunning views of the countryside. Matsushima Bay, which is celebrated for its sea views and sunsets. Try local seafood then walk the shoreline or take a cruise for views of hundreds of pine trees that cover islands in the bay.<\/div>\r\n

After breakfast, you'll be picked up by a local guide at your hotel and taken on a full day tour to two different but equally stunning attractions. First you'll go North towards the beautiful seaside bay of Matsushima. This stunning location has hundreds of tiny islands dotted around the bay, which can be seen on a boat cruise. The temple at Matsushima is found at the end of a gentle walk through enormous mature cedar trees and past some Japanese gardens that rival many found in Kyoto. If you are not keen on the prospect of a 2-3 hour hike, you can browse local shops in the city centre and take a train to meet up with the rest of the group in Matsushima.<\/div>\r\n

In the afternoon, you'll go into the mountains and go on a gentle 60 ~ 90 min hike up the side of a mountain past small Shinto shrines and Buddhist statues. The reward for your climbing 1000 steps up the mountain path is stunning views over the surrounding countryside from the mountain top temple.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

In the evening, enjoy a little bar crawl in the entertainment district (optional, pay locally) or doing some souvenir shopping at outlet malls ,or shopping centres in or around the city.<\/div>\r\n

You can enjoy a variety of light snacks that have been loved since the Edo period, including scallion buckwheat noodles, char fish grilled in a sunken hearth, and the fragrant and sticky sweet potato rice cakes. Several are open as preserved homes like a museums to showcase Japanese lifestyles of the hundreds of years ago.<\/div>\r\n

In the afternoon, you'll ride Aizu Mount Express Train (a single carriage local train) through stunning mountain to the picturesque Yunokami Onsen station. This is a functioning train station with a thatched roof and volcanic hot spring foot baths on the platform of the station to dip your feet and ankles whilst waiting for another train.<\/div>\r\n

On the spring tour, the scene may be vibrant pink from the many cherry blossom trees around the station. After a short stop, you'll continue on Aizu Mount Express Train to Nikko, enjoying the vistas of mountains and rivers from the train all the way. You will transfer to your hotel by shuttle bus.
